Female Enslavement in Rezinat Muhammad’s Habiba and Veronica  Phebe Jatau’s The Hound

Abstract

Female subjugation in northern Nigeria is rampart and severe to the point of enslavement. It is supported by patriarchy and traditional norms of the people, to which the female is subjective and helplessly submissive. This paper examines the subjugation of the northern Nigerian woman as she is given poor or no parental care, over-burdened, denied access to education, married of forcefully at a tender age and forced to bow to the patriarchal whims of the men in her life. The female is therefore enslaved under these unfavorable conditions that she is unable to achieve life‟s successes and actualize herself. The above is the concern of Rezinat T. Muhammad and Veronica Phebe Jatau in projecting the Nigerian woman‟s burden of socio-cultural responsibilities and the resultant effects of such burden, in their novels Habiba and The Hound respectively
