Poetry as a Vehicle for the Promotion of Socio-political  and Economic Development: The Examples of  Sulaiman Wali and Salihu Kwantagora

Abstract

Poetry in our society performs several roles which range from community based needs to micro-individual specific functions. These functions can further be classified into aesthetics, social commentary, historical, cultural, educational and social control. This paper studies Sulaiman Wali‟s Gargadi don Falkawa “A Warning to be Wakeful” and Salihu Kwantagora‟s Wakar Hana Zalunci “Poem Against Oppression” in which both admonish society to adhere to good morals because a nation can only be built and sustained by exemplary men and women. Furthermore, they criticize the ills and evils which abet the dwindling condition of society towards failure. The poets also use their poems as a weapon to redeem this bad situation in order to promote socio-economic and political development.
