The city as a destroyer of dreams in Cyprian Ekwensi's Jagua Nana: a study in the meaninglessness of life
Abstract
Jagua Nana is peopled with characters who have left their different villages to the city of Lagos to eke out a living with the belief that life is rosier, easier and more relaxed in the city. In the city, however, these characters find that contrary to their belief, the city devours her inhabitants. These characters, therefore, resort to all kinds of means to survive. Our aim in this essay, therefore, is to show that Ekwensi 's characters commit murder, steal and prostitute in order to make meaning our of an apparently meaningless city life.References
